the man project
mission statement:
In my work as an artist I started in 1979 to pay attention to male
fantasies. I learned this phrase from the German author Klaus Theweleit
(Mannerphantasien) on the height of the feminist movement in the
70ies. Another influence came from Pina Bausch and her dance theatre
from around 1976 on.
I did videos, performances and installations. A larger project was
a research 1984-86, collecting material in heavy industry zone "Ruhrgebiet",
combined with media material and performance concepts. Questions
were: "Is the deconstructive force that apparently drives man
his only way of being constructive?" or "Are catastrophes
a creative act pursued subconscious by man?"
In the late 90ies I researched the internet and its flood of images
towards the question of male fantasies in images. As a result I
produced the book "women book", a collection of images
and comments. (single unique copy of book) Analysing the pictures
and their subtext as male fantasies I describe man's state of mind
at war of the sexes.
To the very moment I am in the position to overcome any image of
the female. All the consequences of my research is to stop dealing
with images. For now I try to deal only with real communication
which is hard enough.
